Beneath the Undertow

by: Spencer D.

I look at you with unfocused eyes—

With eyes that have seen so little in so much.

A visage disfigured by the merciless waves

Of each and every day—

Swept beneath the undertow,

I try to hold you together,

But you fall apart in my hands

Like wet grains of sand—

Falling ‘ever forgotten…

Beneath the undertow.

I bring you, the past, to mind

Like a conch shell to my ear,

Trying to hear the oceans’ speak

Of times now lost in their swallowing depths…

Swept beneath the undertow.

Where yesterday slowly drifts,

Deep down below the surface

Replaced by tomorrow’s evanescent light—

Ever fading beneath the undertow.
